Broad Match, Exact Match, Phrase Match

When you use the keyword tool you can set it to different options in terms of the results it displays, so there’s broad, there’s phrase, and there’s exact match.

So, broad phrase gives you the results – say, if you type in the keyword “left hand golf clubs” – then the broad match will look for the number of keyword searches that have “left hand” and that have the word “golf” and that have the word “clubs” in it.

And they will combine all those numbers and give you a very high number.

So, it can be useful for getting a good overview of a marketplace to see how popular a marketplace is, but it can be quite deceptive if you’re looking for particular keywords to rank for, the reason being that it gives you an inflated number.

So, if it’s taking all of the searches for “left hand”, “golf” and “clubs” and combining those, the number they will give you will be very inflated, and you might think, “This keyword gets a ton of traffic, so I might start ranking for that one.” whereas the actually fact is that it’s not quite accurate.

And then, the next one down from that is called a phrase match, where if you type in “left hand golf clubs” it will tell all of the searches that have that particular phrase in it, but they could be other words associated with it, so they could be “cheap left hand golf clubs” or “second hand left hand golf clubs”, and so all of those different keywords will add up, and then they’ll total that up and give you a number for that.

So, the one I like to use is exact match, and it basically does exactly what it sounds like. It gives you the results – it tells you the number of people searching for that specific keyword alone, with no other keywords in it, so if you type in “left hand golf clubs”, it’s going to give you the results for the number of people searching for exactly the keyword.

So, this is the most accurate one to work with. The broad one can give you a rough review on the popularity of the broad market when you are trying to get some ideas for markets.

When it comes to actual keyword research, you want to use the exact match ones, and this will give you the exact numbers for all of your keywords, so you can get an idea of what keywords are actually the most popular and how much traffic you can expect to get if you get that page one ranking.
