SEO market research is very important. If you get SEO market research wrong – you are not going to make any money at all, so look closely at the steps below that are needed to pick a right market for search engine optimization.
SEO Market Research Step 1 – Pick a Market
So, first of all, you need to spend some time doing some research. I think this point is crucial and a lot of people don’t spend enough time doing, and so they can be quite disappointed when they don’t get the results they were expecting.
My background, before I ran into marketing, was in physics, so I have a very analytical mindset, and I like to analyze things, see why things work and why they don’t work.
So, I spend a lot of time researching a market and a keyword research before I even create a piece of content. So, typically I’m looking for a market. It doesn’t have to be a market you’re familiar with, but sometimes it can help, especially if you’re doing all the work yourself and you’ll be writing content and articles yourself.
It can help if you’re familiar with a particular market, but if you’re not, that’s fine. What you can do is you can research again – you can go to different sites, like ezinearticles.com, and just type in keyword for general marketplace and try and do some research on the market yourself, so you can see the common ideas and themes in that marketplace and then try and start creating content yourself.
But if you’re going to be doing this, you need to write content, you need to write articles, so it can help if you’re familiar with the marketplace.
Another thing you want to do is look for a market that’s proven to have buyers and a market that has a good search volume and has a lot of people in there.
So, a prime example of a market with buyers is going to be the golf market. It’s a huge market – there’s a lot of people in that market.
They’re proven buyers – they buy clubs and equipment all the time.
So, this is a good market to start looking at in terms of a broad view of a market where you know that people are spending money and they’re passionate about the marketplace, too.

ATTENTION: DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE:
On the other hand, you don’t want to pick a market that’s very, very small and very, very niched, where people typically look for free information and they can find anything they need online, there aren’t that many products in the marketplace, and they aren’t really passionate about it – it’s just more of a hobby.
So, even if you are really familiar with a particular market, that may not be the best market to get into, because if it’s not proven to have people buying products…
You want to make sure, over and above, that the market has a good search volume and it has proven barrage as well. So, if you take the golf one as an example, what I tend to do then is look for submarkets within that one particular market.
Obviously, the golf market is huge, and there’s a lot of players in that market, so if you try number one for the keyword “golf”, it’s going to be next to impossible, especially if you’re just starting out.
One of the reasons I advise against going like that is because the keyword is just too broad.
It’s not focused enough, even if you did had the resources, the time and the money to rank number one for “golf”, sure you’re going to get a lot of traffic, but the traffic you get is going to be very untargeted.
You don’t know if people are looking for golf clubs to buy, looking for golf shoes, looking for golf lessons, if they’re looking for any kind of golf DVD’s, anything like that.
So you’re going to get a lot of traffic, but it’s going to be really untargeted.
SEO Market Research Step 2 – Pick a Submarket
So, what I do is look for submarkets which still have volume but then they’re less competitive.
So, if you look for something like women’s golf clubs, or left-handed golfers, or something like that, then the people coming to your site, if you can get those rankings, are going to be much more targeted.
Because it’s a smaller submarket, it’s going to be less competitive in SEO.
SEO Market Research Step 3 – Find An Affiliate Offer
So, what I would do, if I’ve picked a market and I’ve picked a sub-market, and I have a good idea of what I want to go after, is then, I would go and do some keyword research and try to find some relevant affiliate offer.
So, a relevant affiliate offer – you need something what the market is already looking for.
And so, if you do something for left-handed golfers, you want to make sure that any affiliate offer you’re promoting is going to be relevant to them.
And the same for any market you go into.
Some people go out and find an affiliate offer and then try to find the market to fit it.
What I try to do is find the market that I know is profitable, and then look for affiliate offers within that market and try to find the right submarket within it.
