Some Criteria For Keywords To Look For Using Best Keyword Research Tools
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to SEO, but typically, when I use the Google AdWords keyword tool, if a product name has about a thousand exact matches, searches per month, then that’s something that I would look at.
Sometimes, in different markets, a little bit less would be okay, depending on the competition, and depending on the price point of the particular product.

But anything for a thousand or up is something that I would look at. And then, when doing the competition analysis, there are various schools of thought on this, but, as a guideline, people often say you want to look for – if you put the product name into Google, and you search for it within quotes, so it would be – opening quote, product name, close quote – if you get twenty to thirty thousand results for competing pages, then that’s an okay number to look at.
Anything higher than that could mean that there’s too much competition. Anything lower than that is also a good sign as well, meaning it’s less competitive.
How To Check SEO Competition
But what I like to do is actually look for the competition when you search without quotes, and not so much the competition number, but the competition strengths.
And if you use the Firefox browser, there’s a couple of good plug-ins.
Best Keyword Research Tools For Competition
They’re called SEO Firefox or SEO Quake, and what this would do is, when you do a search in Google for a particular keyword, it’ll give you the normal top ten results as normal, but below each result, it will give you a bunch of information.
They’ll tell you the age of the site, the page rank of the site, how many links that domain has, how many links that specific page has, how many links from .edu, or .gov, and all these things give you an indication as to how strong the competition really is.
So, if you find a keyword which you think looks good, if it’s got a thousand exact match searches per month and it only has twenty thousand competing pages when you search in quotes, those things are a good starting point.
But then if you go and do a search for the product name without the quotes and you find that the top ten results all have something like a page rank of three or four or higher, and they’re all really old domains, like five years older, and they all have ten thousand links linking to them, then this is a sign that it may be a more difficult keyword to rank for.
Because even there the first two factors pointed to a good potential keyword, the real competition is going to be the people on page one for the search term when you search for that in quotes.
And so, if you find this is really, really strong competition, then look at a different potential keyword to go after.
But on the other hand, if you find that the top ten results are ones that are very, very new sites and they have very low page ranks or very low number of links, then it’s a good sign that the key word is one to go after.
Don’t Make This Mistake With Best Keyword Research Tools!
So, that’s kind of an extra step a lot of people don’t really talk about, in terms of keyword research, and it’s one of the reasons why I spend so much time doing the research first, because if you do the research correctly, then you know when you’re just starting out that the efforts you’re going to put in aren’t going to be wasted, or it’s very unlikely they’re going to be wasted.
Whereas if you didn’t do that extra step, the first two criteria would point to potential keywords, but if you didn’t check the actual competition strengths, you could go ahead and spend a whole bunch of time and money, even getting content and backlinks, and just wondering why on earth your site’s not ranking.
So, that one extra step can be really important in terms of getting it over you how strong the competition really is and how likely you’re able to succeed with that keyword.
So, that’s kind of the process I go through with keyword research, and I do that for as many different keywords as I can in the marketplace.
I may start out with a base keyword, which would then on typing it into the Google average tool, it would give you back a hundred different related keywords.
So, I would go down, and I actually use a tool called “Market Samurai”, which is free to use the keyword research module.
It’s normally a paid tool for all the other modules, but the keyword research module is free, and you can plug those keyword into that software, and it’ll go through and analyze all those different criteria and then see if it can it down to make it five or ten potential good keywords to start with.
And then I’ve got to do my manual observation, too, and look to see how strong the competition is for each of those keywords.
And after that I generally have five to ten good keywords to start with, and those would be the keywords that I would building content around my site for.
And in terms of keywords, I have an article ranked on the first page for a keyword that has 600,000 of competitors when you search in quotes, so the number of competing pages is not that important.
